Friends of the Earth is working for a more healthy and just world. We understand that the challenges facing our planet call for more than half measures, so we push for the reforms that are needed, not merely the ones that are politically easy. Our mission is to change the perception of the public, media and policy makers –  and effect policy change – with impactful, well-reasoned policy analysis and advocacy campaigns that protect people and the planet. This hard-hitting advocacy has been the key to our successful campaigns over our four-plus decades in operation.  Our programs address a wide range of domestic and international issues as they relate to the environment, including but not limited to: climate and energy, food and agriculture, oceans and water, economic policy and democracy reform.

We seek a program manager to lead a brand-new multi-faceted campaign on defending the EPA, combatting fossil fuel giveaways, and exposing the role of fossil fuel money in politics.  You will work with our highly engaged staff to launch and implement a successful fossil fuels program, manage the program on a daily basis, build broad internal and external support for the program, and raise funds and awareness.

Your daily responsibilities will include:

  • Project managing a broad campaign team.  Specific areas of effort will include research, advocacy, grassroots organizing, communications, and coalition building. You will help evaluate and refine campaign strategy as needed.
  • Taking the lead on a portion of the campaign, focusing on conflicts of interest and ethics violations at government agencies. This includes setting strategy, educating Members of Congress, conducting public advocacy, and helping develop traditional and social media strategies.
  • Representing FOE among coalition partners, in the media and with policymakers.
  • Collaborating closely with others on the campaign team, including the climate and energy campaigner, Sr. Political Strategist, Membership and Organizing departments, and other staff as needed to implement the campaign plan.
  • Directly supervising a senior researcher, two staff researchers, and other consultants as needed.
  • Taking responsibility for fundraising, including cultivating relationships with foundations, writing proposals, and preparing reports.
  • Modeling and using effective business practices including preparing timesheets, planning budgets, and managing contracts.

Qualifications and Experience

We are looking for someone with the following background:

  • A demonstrated commitment to the environment and social justice.
  • Background in environment and/or fossil fuel issues, with experience in advocacy preferred.
  • At least five years of developing and managing successful campaigns in a progressive setting or for a progressive cause.
  • Knowledge and understanding of legislative and executive branch processes and strategic approach to both policy and politics.
  • Ability to balance and successfully complete a wide range of campaign activities including advocacy, organizing, public speaking, policy development, research, communications and fundraising.
  • Two years experience managing staff and contractors, both in-person and remotely, preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to inspire trust and respect among colleagues and external partners.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and comfort with presenting material to a wide range of audiences, including the public, the press, businesses and government officials.
  • Excellent decision-making skills, professional initiative, time management, prioritization and networking skills, demonstrated initiative, flexibility and creativity.

But above all, you have a passion for the environment and progressive politics . . . and it shows through.  If this sounds like you, please forward your resume here and let’s get started!
